Assignment:
?In the second part of the course, we how discussed the concept of polarity, and the unipolar world characterized by U.S. political, economic, and military dominance, or hegemony, that emerged after the collapse of the U.S.S.R. We also contrasted the concepts hard power and soft power, and how countries can use these to promote their interests.
We then discussed and debated several challenges and issues confronting the U.S., including:
• China's economic, political, and military rise
• The Ukraine War
• The Syrian Civil War
• The U.S.-Saudi Arabia relationship
• Nuclear weapons proliferation
For your final essay, choose any three of the foreign policy issues we have discussed (the rise of China, relations with Russiaand the Ukraine War, the Syrian Civil War, U.S.-Saudi Arabian relations, or nuclear proliferation in Iran) and write a 6 to 7 page double-spaced essay that addresses the following points:
• Explain the origins or background for the issue
• Explain how the issue poses a potential challenge to U.S.hegemony, including how actions by the United States have contributed to the problem
• Explain how you believe the U.S. can use its "hard power", "soft power", or a combination of both to try to address each issue
Your essay should be approximately 6 to 7 pages double-spaced. While you can go beyond this limit if you feel necessary, you should try to keep your essay close to this limit as much as possible. The essay should have an introduction and a conclusion, and in your conclusion you should discuss how effectively you think the U.S. can address these challenges and maintain its global dominance.
You should use a minimum of six course sources overall, at least two for each of the topics you discuss. Your sources can include required weekly readings on the syllabus or videos or readings in the learning modules. While you can refer to material in the lecture notes or in the debate presentations, these do not count towards your minimum number of required sources.
You are free to consult and use sources from outside the course for additional information, but your essay should focus mainly on course material, and external sources will not count towards your minimum number of required sources. Please remember that your essay may be stronger if you use more than the minimum number of sources for any topic.
Your sources should be cited both in the essay as necessary and also listed in a Works Cited page at the end of your essay.
