In our book A Place at the Nayarit we learned about the concept of "placemaking." At the end of the book, Molina talks about the loss of the Nayarit and many similar restaurants as corporate chains and gentrification make it harder for such places to survive. Having such a "place" to belong has long been a part of American culture. In our module, we saw two short videos. The first was the theme song to the TV show "Cheers," and the second one was a recent Applebee's commercial using the same song. Answer the following:
A. In the commercial, we can clearly see that Applebee's is trying to "place" itself (pun intended) as a scene for locals. What do you think? Can a corporate chain become a site of genuine placemaking?
B. Is there a place you go to such as a restaurant, coffee shop, etc. that helps you ground yourself in American life? Is so, what makes it special? If not, what kind of place do you wish you had access to?
