Case
Esteban Lopez is the founder and president of a small company that conducts technology consulting business with the government. At the moment, the company is organized as follows. There is a consultant who visits clients around the island. Although the main clients are located in the metropolitan area, there are always one or another in various towns in the south or east of the country. In the office, an assistant manager works who manages the small warehouse, where the receipt and dispatch of some technology products they get for their customers is made, as well as billing and collection. Accounting is paid for professional services, although the assistant performs certain functions as Esteban requests. When Esteban is out of the office for meetings, the manager takes care of everything in the office.
However, when the manager has to do errands, they always leave in charge the two technicians in charge of managing the networks and customer databases. These employees are very important, because they are the ones who have full knowledge of the computerized systems of the company and were the first hired by Esteban for his business, so they maintain direct communication with Esteban, but not so much with the manager who supervises them. They have developed the successful applications that have led to the growth of the company. Esteban makes all the decisions in the company.
Since its inception, it has shown particular care in delegating important tasks or decisions. He understands that there is no one better than him to make these decisions, no matter how small or routine. Sometimes, processes have been stopped because Esteban was not available at the time it was needed. This shows part of the character he has as president. He behaves in an affable and calm manner making the work environment cordial and enjoyable. From the beginning, he has imposed his rules and hopes everyone knows them. However, there is no policy and procedure manual that summarizes them all.
Recently, the company won a contract that will grow the volume of its revenue and certainly the work that each employee will have to do. The contract states that the company must provide technology consultancies to ten government agencies. One of these, the largest budget in the country. The agencies are located in the four cardinal points and each requires weekly visits from a consultant of the company. In addition, they will need to create three new applications that the government is very interested in putting into operation as soon as seven months. Esteban is very happy with the opportunity that this new contract will bring to his company, but he is somewhat worried, because he does not know if he will be able to do the work with the current organization that the company has and wonders if he will have to make changes to the organizational structure.
