Learning outcome 1: Differentiate the types of literature and literature reviews;
Learning outcome 2: Discuss the concept of knowledge generation in professional nursing;
Learning outcome 3: Describe philosophical underpinnings, methodologies and principles of research relevant to nursing practice;
Learning outcome 4: Explain the generation of knowledge in nursing through the critique of research;
Learning outcome 5: Discuss the ethical principles underpinning the research process;
Learning outcome 6: Recommend strategies for the dissemination of knowledge to facilitate improved health outcomes; and
Learning outcome 7: Identify strategies for the translation of research evidence to nursing practice.
Details of task:
AT2 requires students to complete a literature review integrating critical appraisal of the evidence in preparation for AT3 (teaching and learning).
Bastable (2019) highlights that finding and evaluating sources of evidence guide future practice that requires nurses to think critically before acting. This extends to teaching and learning where you are required to consider a patients needs based on the best available evidence.
For AT2, you are tasked with responding to an actual or potential issue for Mr Neil P Down, outlined in the instructions below. Take the time to get to know Neil, you will meet him in AT's 2 & 3 as we build on the narrative of research and Evidence Based Practice (EBP) informing teaching and learning.
Your research on Neil in AT2 will provide context for your development of the lesson plan for AT3 and then the delivery of the plan to your peers in your final week. By this stage you should know and understand one or more of his actual or potential issues well, enabling you to inherently recognise and critically assess his learning needs using EBP and your new research skills.
Purpose:
Development of a literature review using research skills to inform EBP.
Instructions:
Meet Mr Neil Phell Down, 45 year old roof tiler.
On review, you identify the following actual or potential clinical nursing issues for Neil after he is discharged:
You are to choose one (1) of the identified clinical nursing issues to:
Part A: create a research question and literature search strategy related to the identified issue
Part B: undertake a review of the identified literature
Part A: research question and literature search strategy (1,200 words)
Choose one (1) of the clinical nursing issue identified in the scenario for Neil:
The listed clinical issues link to the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (Communication; Medication Safety, Preventing and Controlling Hospital Acquired Infections, Recognising and Responding to Deteriorating Patients).
Introduction (<100 words) :
State your chosen clinical issue and provide a brief rationale of its relevance to clinical practice as it relates to Neil.
Generate a PICO / PICo research question (~100 words) for your chosen clinical nursing issue.
Translate the chosen clinical nursing issue into an answerable research question using a PICO / PICo framework.
Develop a search strategy (~200 words) and identify search concepts/keywords from your PICO / PICo.
Develop a search strategy/statement with your search terms utilising appropriate database search operators and limiters. You will need to think about synonyms or related terms for your concepts where appropriate.
Using the search strategy, search the Nursing and Midwifery databases (Medline, CINAHL plus); a robust search strategy with a range of keyword terms around the topic.
Critique of one article
Select one (1) relevant article (primary research) from your search results and critique the article by using published guidelines
Part B: Literature review
Write a literature review about your chosen research topic.
Background (300 words excluding PRISMA) - From your understanding of the topic, provide a clear statement about the importance and background of your chosen topic that includes your research question and may cover areas that are not limited to:
the incidence of the health or other issue in the local population compared with national and international data how the issue is diagnosed/identified the current management for this health or other issue the outcomes used to measure the success of the management prognostic details
potential costs to individuals and health services
PRISMA flow diagram is expected to be presented to illustrate the pathway on how you ended up with the particular number of articles in your search (not included in word count).
Review of the literature (1,300 words) - Provide a summary, synthesis and critical evaluation of the literature relevant to your research question. Within the review, you need to identify patterns, consensus, inconsistencies, discrepancies, problems or gaps based on the body of literature. Your literature review should aim to contribute something new to the topic, so it will not be a discussion that has been repeated or previously established in the past.
Conclusion: Translation to practice (200 words) - Outline the implications of your findings for future nursing practice (remember to keep this contextual to Neils situation).
Instructions:
Final Research Topic:
For postoperative patients, does discharge education of surgical wound care reduce the incidence of readmission for wound infections?
P: Post operative patient
I: discharge education on surgical wound care
C: no education
O: reduce incidence of readmission for wound infections
Select 1 article for critical appraisal which should be randomised control trial or cohort study. Use CASP tool to critique as per chosen study.
Make search strategies from CINHAL (ebscohot) or Ovid Medline
