Assignment Overview:
For this assignment you will explore the concept of implicit bias (also known as unconscious bias). There are three parts to this assignment.
Assignment Instructions:
Part 1:
Watch this Global News video segment which will provide you with an explanation about the concept of implicit bias. The video is a Global News segment which is approximately 6 minutes long. It is important for you to watch this segment in order to complete Part 2 and 3 of this
assignment.
Part 2:
Complete the Harvard University Project Implicit Test( race IAT). Be sure to read the Preliminary Information posted by the researchers, and if you agree to the terms of the test, select "I wish to proceed" and then select the "Race IAT" from the list of blue button options. Once you complete the "Race IAT" test you will be given your results immediately. Take a screen shot of the statement at the top of your screen which confirms you completed the test. Include the screen shot image on your assignment submission. Review your results as you will refer to them to answer the questions in Part 2 and 3. You are not required to include the statement which provides the details of your test result.
1. Write a one sentence statement confirming you have completed the Harvard University Project Implicit Test and Insert the screen shot of the system confirmation that you completed the study.
2. What was the most challenging aspect of completing this test?
3. What was your reaction when you read the results of your test? Did you agree or disagree with the results? To answer this question, you do not have to share your results...your answer should focus on your reaction and agreement or disagreement with the results.
Part 3:
Complete this section after you have completed Part 1 and Part 2.
1. Explain in your own words the meaning of implicit bias.
2. Do you agree or disagree with the statement that "all humans have implicit bias"?
Explain why you believe what you believe. You will not be graded on your belief. You will be graded on if you provide a critically thought-out rationale for why you believe what you believe.
3. Discuss at least 1 thing you learned about yourself after completing Part 2 of this assignment. Refer specifically to what aspect of the task you completed in Part 2 which has informed your answer.
4. How does completing this exercise of becoming informed about the meaning of implicit bias and reflecting on how it applies to you, help you become better prepared for your future professional career?
5. Did any aspect of this exercise make you uncomfortable? Explain why or why not. You will not be graded on if you were uncomfortable or if you were not uncomfortable. You will be graded on if you provided a critically thought-out rationale for your answer.
