The concept of having a culture revolving around safety is paramount to safe and efficient patient care in the healthcare setting and its role in preventing medication errors. To start, having standards to follow such as the patients' six rights of administering medication is one example of having a safety measure in place. Nurses can follow these six rights of medication administration to prevent medication errors. Not only this but nurses are expected to perform three six rights checks throughout the medication administration process. A few more examples of this could be having annual classes on how to practice nursing safely and reviewing the monotonous but ever-so-important tool of hand-washing. Healthcare organizations can help foster this environment by being productive leaders in their workspace, such as thoughtful education and training, and not belittlement. Leaders of the workplace can also help foster this ensuring alignment on mission, purpose, and vision, inspiring confidence in the face of challenges, and leveraging mistakes as a source of learning.
