For human beings, of all the ecological interactions that happen all over the globe every day, the ones that are most important, are those that help us sustain our lives. Often, scientific researchers working on plants and animals in natural systems try to remove human beings from the story. We try to be objective observers/experimenters to determine the workings of natural systems without human influence. Ecologists try, but humans have so fundamentally impacted the ecology of so many biological systems that ignoring their influence might mean missing the whole picture.

One useful way to look at ecology from a human-centered viewpoint is the concept of ecosystem services. These are the services that natural habitats provide the human population for free.

Pick the three ecosystem services you think are most important.

List your top three, and explain why you chose them. What would happen to our way of life if these stopped functioning?

What would we have to do to compensate for the loss of these systems?

Are any of the ecosystem services you listed threatened right now? Who is responsible? Could we do anything to reduce the threat?
