Assignment: Finishes Plan and Schedule
Objective 1: To incorporate the appropriate use of products and materials in a commercial context.
Objective 2: To organize finishes plans and schedules according to industry standard.
Objective 3: To find and articulate key information, using industry terms and standards through choosing finishes, materials, and products for commercial buildings.
Objective 4: To demonstrate the principles of sustainability while understanding the inherent qualities of materials, products in compliance with sustainability principles.
Description
In this assignment, students will create a proper finishes plan(s) and schedules according to industry standards. Students will select materials, finishes, and products for the specified areas that were indicated for review in Assignment 2.
The selection process should cohesively articulate the concept of creating a healthy indoor environment as well as addressing the distinct needs of a commercial space including durability and maintenance. This assignment encourages students to incorporate suitable material selections that address sustainability and durability through researching and selection of finishes, products and materials.
Instructions
(RE)DEFINING THE SPACE
Using the commercial space you examined in Assignment 2, utilize your analysis and product recommendations to aesthetically re-design appropriate products and materials that enhance sustainability, durability, maintenance and are appropriate within the commercial environment you chose.
1. When identifying materials/finishes, you need to assess existing conditions and how to incorporate better products through creating a professional finish plan and schedule that will include proposed suggestions for improvement and product specs and properties.
2. Ensure you include all specified areas:
o Waiting/Entrance
o Reception or greeting area
o Public space such as a boardroom, dining area, merchandise area etc.
o Private space such as an office, staff area or back room
o One washroom (preferably a barrier free or universal style)
3. Write a 100-150-word Design Concept to describing your ideas and strategies for products and materials selection for your commercial space. This is to include:
o Client profile.
o Your products and materials selection concept.
o How you will reflect the function and atmosphere of this commercial space.
o How you intend to use products and materials to demonstrate sustainability and healthy indoor environment.
o How you intend to address durability, maintenance and any specific factors related to your space (i.e. anti-microbial)
4. You can add any data you think that will highlight the project. You may add images for your inspiration to explain your ideas. Be sure to use proper citation for the
images that aren't yours.
PART ONE: FINISHES PLAN
5. Create a finishes plan according to industry standards for all the spaces you documented in Assignment 2 and listed in yopur Design Concept above.
6. For each space:
o define all wall finishes with suitable tags and symbols,
o define all floor finishes with suitable tags and symbols,
o define all ceiling finishes with suitable tags and symbols,
o define all millwork with suitable tags and symbols,
o define all fixtures with suitable tags and symbols, and
o add notes and dimensions whenever required.
Note: Be sure to utilize key information using industry terms and standards letter- number system for each material and finish (i.e., F1 (flooring), PT1 (paint), WP1 (wall paint, etc.).
PART TWO: FINISHES SCHEDULE
7. Using the table format provided in the Finish Schedule Example below, document all finishes, materials, and products selections into a schedule.
a. Per the example provided, finishes should be organized by room names.
8. Utilize the letter-number system (eg., WP1) used in the finishes floor to generate a schedule number for each material and finish.
9. Every column provided in the example below should be complete, meaning that for each material listed in the table there should be a tag, room name, finish, manufacturer, and so on.
10. No images of the selected finishes are required for this assignment. A full Product and Material Manual used in this space will be created in Assignment 4.
11. Note the following for schedule number samples: (F) for floor treatment, (B) for Baseboard, (WP) for Wall Paint, (WC) for wall covering, (AC) for architectural molding, (C) for Ceiling, etc. You are free to add to this as necessary.
12. Configure the report using PowerPoint to be professional and compressive to print at 8 ½″ X 11″ size (choose landscape or portrait). The report has to be organized as follows:
o Title Page. Please make sure to include the following:
o Client name and location.
o Course No. and title, term, your names, the name of your professor, and the Interior Design Program: The School name, and date.
o Table of Contents
o Design Concept: this has to include client name and profile, project components, and your finishes selection concept along with any data you think will highlight the project.
o Finishes floor plan(s) with proper tags and notes in accordance with industry standards.
o Finishes schedule documenting all final finishes, materials, and products selections.
o References: Include any resources that you have used to prepare this report using APA format. This includes: books, articles, specifications, and websites.
