Big Data and Bounded Ethicality
By Yuval Feldman and Yotam Kaplan
In this research paper, Feldman and Kaplan argue that human beings can never be free of bias or fallibility due to the concept of "bounded ethicality". Bounded ethicality states that human ethics are limited by the fact that they cannot make a full objective critique of their own behaviour. Therefore, human ethics are bounded by bias.
Feldman and Kaplan's paper argues that big data can be used to mitigate the impact of bounded ethicality, as big data can be used to identify behavioural misconduct before it has severe consequences for the organisation. As you engage with this reading, you may find it useful to focus on the following sections:
Introduction (Pages 3-13)
Bounded ethicality and law enforcement (Pages 22-37)
As you read through the research paper, consider the following questions:
- What does "bounded ethicality" mean to you?
- What is driving the increasing importance of ethical considerations in organisations?
- Does the law enforcement in your country provide enough ethical guidance for organisations? What is the reason behind your response to this question?

Addressing conflicts of interests in your organisation
Think of an example of an ethical failure in an organisation that you may have come across in the news, blogs, or journal articles.
Alternatively, conduct some research on ethical failures. Share your example with your peers, and discuss how a greater appreciation for ethics could have prevented this ethical failure:
- What kind of behaviour resulted in the ethical failure?
- What kinds of tension or conflicts manifested as a result of the ethical failure?
- As a compliance officer, do you feel that you would be able to hold the stakeholders accountable for the ethical failure, even in the case where it was technically not a breach of legislation?
Share your key takeaways
Take a moment to reflect on your experience of the content. Use the following questions to guide your thinking, and share your reflections with your peers:
- Has your perception of compliance changed since Module 1? If so, which factors led to this shift?
- Have you been able to apply any principles from the course to your environment yet? Try to think of an example, and describe what happened.
- How do you foresee the role of compliance in your organisation changing in the near future?
