Assignment:

One of the major themes throughout our course has been the rebuilding of the nation following the devastation of the American Civil War and the rise of the concept of American civilization. Using our historical tools of causality and change/continuity over time/space, analyze the period between 1865 and 1900. What were the causes of Reconstruction, industrialization, the Gilded Age, and American expansionism? How did each of these major periods/themes represent change/continuity over time/space? How did each of the periods relate to the next in our larger historical narrative that we've built throughout the first unit of our course? Make sure to discuss each of these as they relate to the process of building both the nation and the collective national identity that took place throughout the second half of the 19thcentury and support your arguments with evidence from the textbook, course readings, and lectures.
