Computing Bandwidth Needs and Quality of Service
A. For the following scenarios, you will need to compute the minimum bandwidth needed, and what bandwidth would be needed if you are going to over-provision the network by 10%, 25%,and 50%.
1. Amalgamated Systems has just added VoIP to their network to support their internal employees as they make phone calls across their network. They have selected a CISCO VoIP system that uses approximately 50 packets per second/per call and each packet is 160 Bytes. They are anticipating that they will have between 200-300 calls placed at thesame time from 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday. From 5pm-9pm they anticipate this going down to 50 or less simultaneous calls (due to time zone differentials across the company). If their current network has 80% utilization of its existing 1Gigabit backbone, will they need to add any bandwidth? Make sure to compute what is needed to handle the calls for the new VoIP system.
2. What would happen if the simultaneous calls placed was increased to 500 during peak time? Compute the new amount of bandwidth needed.
3. Mary from sales and marketing is going to give a 10 minute streaming video for 10 sales and marketing people across the company. If each connection needs the ability to send 120Kbps over the line what will her total bandwidth needs be per second, per minute, and over the 10 minute time frame? Take into consideration what this will do to the performance of the network and the VoIP. Since she does this on a regular basis, at least weekly, what is the best method for accommodating her bandwidth needs on apermanent basis?
4.John and Fred want to hold video conference calls daily with the satellite offices at Amalgamated. Each conference call will host John and Fred (they are at different offices at corporate), and 8 other employees and managers from the satellite sites. If the video conferencing system needs to be able to send 324Kbps, per connection, then what additional bandwidth will they need?
