One source of big data that I am likely to use in my future advanced practice nursing role is computerized physician order entry or CPOE. CPOE systems allows physicians and other healthcare providers who can input orders, order medications, laboratory tests, and other services electronically (Tahmina et al., 2020). This data can be used to impact client care by increasing safety through double checks of allergies and medications and by medication compatibilities. It can also increase safety by suggesting safe medication dose ranges rather than free-texting medication doses and intervals. Generally, CPOE improves client care by decreasing medication errors and reducing redundant tests (Tahmina et al., 2020). Utilizing clinical practice guidelines and care pathways that are embedded in reference material, CPOE databases greatly increase patient safety and quality of client care (Tahmina et al., 2020). Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) have a role in data stewardship which refers to the long-term or sustainable care of data. APRNs will utilize data throughout many aspects of their daily practice and therefore, are also responsible for ensuring data management.
