Tom, a 56-year-old obese computer designer is diagnosed with hypertension. Your friend Joan, a 23-year-old, 5ft 10 inches and weighs 100 lb student, is also diagnosed with hypertension and hyperthyroidism. Both Tom and Joan are patients of Dr. Hype. Joan knows you are student of A&P, so Joan wanted you to explain why Tom's was given diuretic, instructions to reduce salt intake and increase his daily exercise, while Joan was given a beta blocker instructed to reduce calcium intake and monitor her calcium levels closely but was not given an exercise regimen. She wants to know if Dr. Hype is a quack! A. Explain how Mr. Tom's and Joan's treatments will affect their hypertension. In other words, how does each of the doctor's recommendations affects the blood pressure mechanism discussed in class (5pts) (i) Tom's diuretics and Beta blocker (ii) Joan's reduce calcium intake and monitor calcium levels. (iii) why Joan's treatment was legitimate (Dr. hype is not a quack) and why it was necessary to be different form Tom's.
