Biostatistics Excel questions

Answer fully- no plagiarism!

The purpose of this discussion is to apply what you learned in the readings in this unit related to the process of summarizing data.

If you have not already done so, complete Practice Problems 1-4 below, using an Excel file. Save the Excel file you created for with your last name in the file title.

For your post in this discussion, provide a summary of the results for each of the four problems. For each problem, your description should include a discussion of the findings, using the statistical terms appropriate to describe the characteristics you are analyzing. Things to consider for each summary include (but are not limited to) the following questions:

• How would you describe the way that the data are distributed?
• Compare the mean and the median. What does the comparison suggest, in terms of the research question?
• Are there any outliers? If so, explain what those outliers might mean in terms of the research question.
• How close is the standard deviation to the mean? What might that suggest in terms of the research question?

PRACTICE PROBLEMS

1. A study is conducted to estimate the mean total cho-lesterol level in children 2-6 years of age. A sample of 9 participants (n= 9) is selected, and their total cho-lesterol levels are measured as follows.

185 225 240 196 175 180 194 147 223

a. Use the Data Analysis lbol to compute the sample mean, standard deviation, and median.

b. Use the QUARTILE function to compute the first and third quartiles.

2. Data were collected as part of a study or coffee consumption among graduate students. The following reflect cups per day consumed:

3 4 6 8 2 1 0 2

a. Use the Data Analysis Tool to compute the sample mean, standard deviation, and median.

b. Use the QUARTILE function to compute the first and third quartiles.

3. In a study of a new antihypertensive medication, SBPs are measured at baseline (or the start of the study, before any treatment is administered). The data are as follows:

120 112 138 145 135 150 145 163
148 128 143 156 160 142 150

Use Excel functions to compute the sample mean, standard deviation, median, and quartiles.

4. The following are baby height measurements, in cen-timeters, for a sample of women participating in a study of pregnancy outcomes:

28 30 41 48 29 48 62 49 51 39

Use the Data Analysis Tool to compute summary statistics.
