Problem 1: Compute the plastic moment for strong axis bending, Mpx, of the Tee section shown below.

b) use the same cross section as in a), but assume A36 steel (Fy = 36 ksi) for the flange plate and A514 Gr. 100 (Fy = 100 Ksi) for the stem.

Problem 2: A simply welded I-section beam carries a concentrated load W at midspan. The load is 20% dead load and 80% live load. Determine the maximum service load W that can be permitted to be carried. Use A36 (Fy = 36Ksi) steel, and assume that the beam is a compact section and laterally supported. Include the selfweight of the beam in your calculations. Deflection is not of concern.

Problem 3: Select the lightest W section to carry a uniformly distributed dead load of 2 k/ft in addition to the beam weight, and uniformity distributed live load of 18 k/ft. the beam is simply supported over a span of 7f. Use A992 (Fy = 50 Ksi) steel, and assume that the beam is laterally supported. Deflection is not of concern.
