Fermentation of starch and sugar crops yields about 10% molar volumes of ethanol in water. Distillation of this mixture to remove the water and produce pure ethanol is an expensive and energy intensive process. To reduce fuel costs, some researchers have proposed partial distillation to a 50% mixture of ethanol and water, a mixture that could be used to power a high temperature fuel cell. Calculate the enthalpy change in oxidizing this mixture in air if the reactants are at 298 K and the products are at 1200 K.
