A certain sample of coal contains 1.2% sulfur by mass. While the coal is burned the sulfur is converted to sulfur dioxide (SO2). To prevent air pollution, SO2 is treated with calcium oxide (CaO) to form calcium sulfite (CaSO3) as shown in the reaction below
