Question

We had a patient come in who has a compulsive sexual behavior disorder. This is defined as a persistent pattern of failure to control intense, repetitive sexual behaviors, impulses, and urges to the point that the person is neglecting their health, other interests, and responsibilities over an extended period of at least six months (Savard et al., 2020). My preceptor prescribed naltrexone at 50 mg twice a day to reduce the intensity of sexual urges and behaviors. The patient has been following this regime for over a year. The patient has been successful in treatment and can now participate in their occupation without impairment, and their social life has improved. There are not a lot of studies on how naltrexone affects compulsive sexual behaviors. Hopefully, more studies will be done to help evaluate the effectiveness. I will keep this treatment in mind if I run into the diagnosis in the future.
