Consequently, the needs assessment is designed to reduce costs by preventing unnecessary training and determining the proper sources to use when training is necessary. How can management work with HR to determine if training is necessary? What are some other benefits of a needs assessment other than identifying organization's need for specific training programs?

In order for one to determine this, a comprehensive needs assessment should take place. Needs assessments help identify training needs. These needs may be in the areas of corporate initiatives, new business ventures, safety reports analysis, performance reviews, and high turnover rates. Once the analysis is complete the instructional design begins. Training objectives are identified and the task of determining the training technique and delivery style is before you. There are a variety of techniques that can be used including, the traditional lecture, simulations, computer-based training (CBT), programmed learning, internship techniques, and, the old standby, on-the-job training (OJT). The technique selected is very dependent on the materials to be covered and the speed at which one would be expected to perform the tasks acquired. Training materials need to be validated to assure that they contain the necessary components required to develop the learned traits.
