This assignment provides you with an opportunity to comprehensively complete the research paper. 

Research Paper: The written paper is to provide you with an opportunity to gain depth of knowledge in an area of human resources (i.e., a particular topic within a specific HRCI test specification area) that will support your continued learning and development.

Upon completion of this assignment you should be able to:

  • Strategic HR. Examine strategic human resource management as a means of developing, contributing to, and supporting the organization's mission, vision, values, strategic goals, and objectives, with the aim of organizational effectiveness through formulation of policies, procedures and practices.  
  • Workforce Planning and Employment. Describe how to develop, implement, and evaluate sourcing, recruitment, hiring, orientation, succession planning, retention, and organizational exit programs necessary to ensure the workforce's ability to achieve the organization's goals and objectives.
  • Human Resource Development. Identify ways to develop, implement, and evaluate activities and programs that address employee training and development, performance appraisal, talent and performance management, and the unique needs of employees to ensure that the knowledge, skills, abilities, and performance of the workforce meet current and future organizational needs.
  • Total Rewards. Explore ways to develop, select, implement, administer, and evaluate compensation and benefits programs for all employee groups that support the organization's strategic goals, objectives, and values.
  • Employee and Labor Relations and Risk Management. Review ways to develop, contribute to, and support the workplace relationship between employer and employee in order to maintain relationships and working conditions and a safe and secure working environment in order to balance employer and employee needs and rights in support of the organization's strategy, values and protection from liability issues.

Following completion of the self-reflection paper, read your selected article or report. You will then commence writing the three to four page research paper addressing a specific topic within one of the HRCI test specification areas for the PHR/SPHR certification exams. The six test specification areas include:

  8. As a reminder, the article or white paper is a required selection from the Sources and Suggested Readings section of the correlating SHRM Foundation report shown below. A complete listing of the SHRM Foundation reports is shown below, matched with the corresponding HRCI test specification area. Download and review the following:

  15. For your final research paper, write a three to four page paper addressing the HRM topic. In your paper, include at least one paragraph for the introduction, substantial topic headings and sub-headings, and conclusion.
  16. Your paper is to be written in APA 6e format with proper mechanics (i.e., grammar, spelling, word choice, punctuation, and sentence structure). A title page and reference page are required, in addition to the three to four pages and optional appendix for larger items requiring expansion.
