Question: According to Reichenberg and Seligman (2016), diagnosis of mental disorders is often viewed as "labels", and many insist that diagnosis is only for the insurance companies. According to Reichenberg and Seligman (2016), diagnosis is important because effective treatment planning begins with the conceptualization of a diagnosis. It is extremely difficult to recommend treatment without a diagnosis. According to Reichenberg and Seligman (2016), the primary goal of diagnosis and treatment planning is to be able make sound therapeutic decisions that will help clients feel better about themselves and their lives, return to better functioning, and achieve their goals. Like a doctor, social workers must do no harm. It is critical to be knowledgeable about what helps and what has the potential for causing our clients to get worst. According to Reichenberg and Seligman (2016), assessment is important because it is the development of a comprehensive diagnosis and corresponding treatment plan that is specific to the client's needs, that is consistent with evidence-based practice, and that will be effective in the treatment of that particular diagnosis. Assessments should be undertaken with care because effective treatment planning is unlikely unless the clinician has made an accurate and comprehensive diagnosis and has a good grasp of the client's needs and strengths. This can only be acquired by taking the time to conduct a thorough, careful diagnostic assessment.
