One of the causes of the Chernobyl disaster was the composition of the control rods. Each rod was mostly Boron (a neutron absorber) and the tip was made of graphite (a neutron moderator). While fully inserting the control rods the graphite tips displaced the water beneath them for fractions of a second. Water is also a neutron absorber.

Sketch a simple graph of power vs time of this situation. Keep your graph simple, but informative. Start your graph at t=- .01 seconds.

Assume the following:

1. Power output was high, but constant before the graphite tip reached the water.

2. It took .05s for the graphite tip to be replaced by the Boron portion of the control rod.

3. Assume the fuel channel survived the power spike (in the real situation most of them failed).
