Purpose:

To earn up to 10 extra points in the journal category (25%) of your course grade, you can compose a formal review of a new literary artifact. The purpose is todemonstrate how well you can:1) read a text for detail, 2) identify literary elements and themes in a text, 3) respond to a text using both summary and analysis, and 4) compose a polished written response.

Task:

View and review a 21st Century (created in the last 18 years) literary artifact (poem or poetry collection; song, soundtrack, or album; play or film; short story, graphic novel, or novel; literary essay, memoir, or literary journalism) whose subject matter somehowrelates to the sea.

Your written review must include:

o a thorough summary of the text, author, and publication circumstances;

o an introduction to the criteria you're using to evaluate the text's impact;

o an argument about the text's impact; and

o evidence to support that argument - details from the text and explanations of how those details work (or don't work).

Your review can use the first person perspective, or not; it can be two pages or ten pages or in between - it will not be assessed on length but rather on how well it introduces a literary text, connects it to the body of literature of the sea, and supports an argument about its impact.

Part of that assessment will include how clearly and credibly your review is written - proofreading is a must. So is MLA citation format for the primary text being reviewed, and for any other texts you choose to reference in order to supplement your review.
