Peace of Mind Insurance Co. is a growing insurance company based in a small tower block in the centre of a new town in the South East of England. It employs some 506 staff; 253 of these are on flexi-time and most of them are concerned with front-line selling activities such as pet, accident and travel insurance. In the past year the company has expanded its portfolio of services to cover commercial insurance and has seen a corresponding growth in profits, profile and people. Recent incidents in the town, coupled with a risk assessment around the security of the company, have led the CEO to decide to introduce 'active badges'. These credit-card sized badges are worn on the clothing of employees: not only do they act as photo identification, but they also emit soundless electrical signals that are picked up by sensors placed in the corridors and rooms of the workplace, ensuring that the employees, who will each have their own individual electronic code, are tracked wherever they are.
The CEO has sent the following memo to the HR Director:
Dear Chirag,
As you know we have been concerned about the levels of security in our building for some time (along, as always, with persistent concerns about productivity, profitability and publicity) and I have decided that one of the ways of tackling this is to introduce active badges for all staff from next April. This fantastic invention means that we will know where anyone is at any given time. Given our experiences following the introduction of CCTV cameras at the exits/entrances to the building, when all of the smokers overreacted and were up in arms about us spying on their smoking breaks - to say nothing of the local union getting wind of what was going on and having the cheek to offer to mediate even though no one here is in a union -I want us to introduce the change as smoothly as possible.
Please could you give me a short presentation, say next Wednesday at 2 pm, about the employee relations implications around the introduction, suggesting how we might prepare the ground so that the badges are introduced with the minimum of fuss. I have booked the electricians; they will be on site, installing the sensors, over the annual shut down at the end of December, so we have about two months to get things organised.
Regards,
Roger.
