2. Of the vaious goals of sentencing, which one do you favor? Why? Explain the disposition suitable to your choice.

3. If you were a victim of crime do you feel that diverting the perpetrator would be "justifying justice"? How? If you had to sentence one of the following perpetrators to diversion, who do you think would benefit the most from a diversion program and why?

A) Dave Smith, a twenty-five year old father of three who has just been arrested for possession of child pornography and has one prior arrest of lewd and lascivious assault when he was 18 and the victim was his 16 year old girlfriend.

B) Shana Harris, a book-keeper for the school system in a wealthy county, who was arrested on several counts of embezzlement after stealing over a million dollars while working for the school system.

C) Ryan Phelps, a former athlete, now a private business owner who owns a non-profit working with children, was arrested for possession of painkillers (400 Oxycotin) with the intent to deliver after he was stopped for speeding. Explain your choice.

4. As a supervisor you must hire a new probation officer, what attributes would you be looking for in your candidate? How does one develop the attributes needed to become a successful probation officer? If a probation officer had to focus on either provision of services to his/her probationers or supervision and enforcement of probation conditions, which do you believe would be the most efficient in reducing recidivism? Why?

5. As a drug court judge, you have before you an individual suffering from drug dependency who has appeared before you on three previous occasions. This individual has more potential than most defendants that come before you. She has completed three years of college with a 3. 5 GPA, but simply cannot complete drug rehabilitation program. What will be your approach to this offender this time? What sanction will you give her? Do you believe our criminal justice system should have other specialized courts, if so, what other specialized courts do you believe would be effective intermediate sanctions? Is there a danger for a court to become too specialized? Do you see specialized courts as an efficient approach to dispense justice?
