Case Study Assignment
This task involves applying your knowledge of the AOD treatment system to a case study (Ollie). You will be provided with intake and screening information for Ollie in Week 3 (Content > Assessment > Case Study 1) and will be required to complete questions (also released in Week 3) relating to aspects of the intake process
Learning Outcome 1: Case studies will assess student ability to clearly identify the role of mental health problems in substance use disorders, their aetiology, manifestation and treatment.
Learning Outcome 2: Case studies will assess student ability to accurately identify problematic substance use through the use of screening instruments such as the Victorian Government's or the AUDIT-C.
Learning Outcome 3: Case studies will assess student ability to accurately assess mental health problems, including suicide risk, using appropriate screening instruments and placing these issues within an appropriate framework for continued care, through exceptional report and case note writing skills.
Learning Outcome 4: Case studies will assess student ability to demonstrate a strong understanding of the Victorian drug treatment, housing and social welfare sector and identify appropriate care pathways for people presenting with a wide array of psychosocial problems.
Learning Outcome 5: Case studies will assess student ability to demonstrate a clear theoretical and practical understanding of major counselling and other treatment modalities (i.e., medications and harm-reduction practices) for addiction-related problems.
Scenario and Questions for Case Study
You are employed as an intake worker at a local AOD service. One afternoon you receive a phone call from a man named Ollie who is seeking assistance for what he has labelled ‘problem drinking'. You spend 15 minutes speaking with him in order to determine his needs, current risk level, and overall prioritisation for treatment. During the phone call you complete an intake form. The ATOP, AUDIT, DUDIT, and K10 are completed by Ollie after the call. Please refer to these documents when answering the below questions.
1. For the above service user, which 2 risks of harm would you consider to be of highest impact? Please justify your choices.
2. In which category does the service user's score place them for the AUDIT screen?
3. In which category does the service user's score place them for the DUDIT screen?
4. In which category does the service user's score place them for the K10 screen?
5. Complete the Summary of Identified Need for your service user. This summary should be a professional statement that can be used by other clinicians when providing assistance.
6. Using the AUDIT/DUDIT dependency category, and the complexity factors identified which tier would the service user fall into?
7. Which priority would you place this service user (low, medium, high)? Provide a justification for prioritisation.
8. What would your next steps be for this service user?
9. Which optional modules would be appropriate to recommend in the comprehensive assessment? You can select as many as you like, however inappropriate modules will subtract points.
