You are to decide on your own topic based on something that has happened or will happen (the cause) and discuss what effect (the result) it has or will have on society, on our community, and/ or on you. Think of a great topic! (Remember, this essay must be written in third person; no first or second person may be used!)

• Compose a topic outline from the prewrite. Remember, the purpose is to show how causes have led to one effect OR how effect has led to one cause. Choose ONE or the other. Make sure the outline is written first to help you stay organized. Be sure the outline is correct. Please place the outline, first. The outline and essay is one MS Word document.
• Typed TOPIC outline is required for this composition. The outline should be fully developed, follow the thesis, and the paper must be in the SAME order as the thesis and outline.
• 1,000-1,250 words (excluding a, an, and the)
• COUNTS TWO TIMES
• Keep your purpose and tone for writing in mind for the entire paper.
• Keep the audience in mind throughout the paper as develop your details.
• Include an engaging and mature hook (attention grabber).
• Informative, purposeful and general sentences in the introduction.
• Mature, clear and well formulated thesis statement that identifies the topic and identifies the cause and effect OR effect and cause relationship to explain in the paper. Keep in mind this IS NOT an argument essay. This is an expository (explaining/informative) essay.
• Body paragraphs must be written in order of importance (least to most OR most to least with intentional transitional words or phrases).

Cause and Effect Directions

• Each body paragraph must have a strong and logical topic sentence along with sufficient supporting sentences and a concluding/transitional sentence.
• Distinguish between the following:
o main and contributory causes
o immediate and remote causes
o understanding causal chains
o avoid post hoc reasoning
• Use FEEDCATS to help you develop ideas and build sentences. Keep in mind you will not be using the 'S' in FEEDCATS since the 'S' stands for statistics (research paper only).
• Every sentence must be intentional.
• Know the difference between affect and effect. Do not confuse them in your essay.
• Define necessary concepts and/or terms.
• The concluding paragraph must be strong, focused, and final.
• Verbs must be in either present tense or past tense based on the writer's intent.
• Sentences MUST BE VARIED in style and length.
• THIRD PERSON PRONOUNS ONLY.
• PHRASES: preposition phrases, gerund phrases, appositive phrases, participle phrases, and infinitive phrases must be present.
• CLAUSES: adverb, adjective, and noun clauses must be present.
• Varied sentence beginnings (adverbs, transitions, dependent clauses, introductory phrases, etc.)
• Varied sentence structures (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex)
• Be certain your ideas are logical.
• Do not use any contractions.
• Use the proper MLA format.
• Concentrate on effective FOCUS, CONTENT, ORGANIZATION, STYLE and CONVENTIONS
• Use active voice instead of passive
o The ball was thrown by John (passive).
o John threw the ball (active).
• Read your paper aloud to catch sentence errors
• Sentence fragments, run-on sentences, or comma splices will result in not receiving a grade higher than a ‘B'.
• Specific errors of grammar to be checked are:
o Sentence fragments
o Run-on sentences
o Comma-splices
o Parallel structure
o Dangling and misplaced modifiers
o Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation
