Question

A complementary alternative therapy that has been around for thousands of years is aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants that can be either absorbed by the skin or inhaled. Aromatherapy has been proven to reduce anxiety. In one article, aromatherapy was used on PICU patients (percutaneous coronary intervention) in an ICU. 56 patients in the ICU received aromatherapy 10 minutes before and after cardiac stent insertion. Aromatherapy essential oils used included lavender, roman chamomile, and neroli. Compared to the control group who did not receive the aromatherapy, the group that did receive the aromatherapy had significantly lower levels of anxiety. Also, it was found aromatherapy reduced anxiety, increased sleep, and stabilized BP of patients undergoing cardiac stent insertion. This study is just one example that shows the benefits of aromatherapy.
