Question: As the senior marine engineer for a company managing the recruitment and placement of ships officers for customers operating 10 cruise ships of around 170,000gt tonnes each. The vessels have the latest power plant and can carry up to 3,000 guests.

Your task is:

1. To complete a job specification for a new Electro-Technical Officer that will be required to continually serve on-board for up to 3 months, followed by 3 months leave. The specification should include information about the most important legislation that all seafarers are required to be aware of, together with the technical subjects that electrical engineering entails.

2. Compile a report to the Managing Director suggesting an interview strategy including how you would short list the suitable applicants and what questions you would ask during the interview and what you would expect of an ideal candidate that would be leading the electrical team and looking after important customers.

The ships are registered under the Flag of Bahamas and were built in Italy to the Lloyds Register rules. As the electro-technical Officer is part of the engineering team, the specification should include an outline of the experience required including the kind of machinery knowledge, skills and subjects that have been studied such as scientific principles and electrotechnology etc.
