Industry Compendium
Description:
Students are required to compile a Tourism and Hospitality Industry Compendium which comprises a variety of industry information.
Format:
It will include, but not necessarily be limited to, information on topics such as important industry organisations, employment opportunities, matters relating to workforce diversity, leadership and management related skills, all of which are needed in this dynamic and competitive industry.
While completing this compendium you should be considering Human Resource Management practices such as job descriptions and person specifications, career development, training and development, workplace health and safety, and codes of conduct and related matters. While some of these practices are common across all industries, the Tourism and Hospitality industries often have a number of industry specific, and focus areas.
INDUSTRY VIGNETTES (mini case studies)
Vignette 1.
You are the HRM Manager for your organisation. You have been asked to run a training session for your organisation on ‘Recruiting and Selecting Employees'. One of the department managers/supervisors attending the session has asked you the question: "Which is most important, recruiting OR selecting employees?"
You must choose ONLY ONE of these processesand explain why it is more important than the other.
You need to identify 4 reasons which support your decision as to which process (recruitment or selection) is most important.
Vignette 2.
You are the HRM Manager for your organisation. You have been asked to recruit and organise employeesfor a new department in your organisation. The new department has come about due to the success and growth of the business, and the associated restructure of how the overall business is run.
Describe how you would commence, first start, undertaking this upcoming employment activity, identifying 4 activities you would undertake.
ASSIGNMENT RATIONALE PART A:
This assessment item presents 2 vignettes (mini case studies, very short stories) of real-life scenarios for youto analyse. These types of scenarios are not uncommon in HRM and management work environments.
As you will remember the HRM function is part of the overarching function of management. HRM within its own strategic and operational areas is comprised of a variety of practices and activities. Importantly these practices, while having their own unique purposes, interact with each other in often direct and indirect ways.
PART B - PROFESSIONAL AWARENESS & IDENTITY
Your studies in any discipline are leading toward you being employed in a variety of industry areas. Whether you are studying in areas such as tourism, hospitality, event, or any other areas a common goal exists of gaining employment you are interested in.
This assessment item challenges you to identify two different (not the same type of job) advertised employment opportunities you find interesting as a career. This is an exercise in identifying career pathways. Further, you then need to consider you own strengths, weaknesses and opportunities currently, and how to pursue your future study and any potential additional professional development toward your career.
Finally, in whatever industry you work, or for whatever organisation you work, there will be legal and ethical professional responsibilities and standards. As such you are required to be able to identify an understanding of these requirements.
