Abigail's Post:

  1. The impact of relocating on the family - Factors such as whether one's spouse can also take advantage of the move to the new location, for instance, if their job is flexible concerning remote working or if there are job opportunities within their field there. The children must also be considered in terms of it is kid-friendly and the circumstances of raising children and the quality of schools in the new location.
  2. Cost of living - The cost of living in a new area is crucial when determining the cost of moving. Earning more money does not count for much if the cost of living in a new country is much too high. For example, Numbeo (n.d.) shows that the cost of living in London, England for a family of four averages about 3,086.43£ or 37, 032£ per annum which would translate to $4070.56 USD to $48,846.71 USD which is well within the pay offered per annum. However, the basic cost of housing and necessities in the new location must be accounted for when considering a move.
  3. Advancement Opportunities - Whilst a new job opportunity may come with higher pay, it is vital to consider if the move provides an evident opportunity for future advancement, bonuses, and promotions. Also, it is important to consider if there will be training and educational initiatives that will help one improve their skills.  One must also consider whether the new job motivates a shove into an unfamiliar territory or feels like a place to get comfortable. The last thing to contemplate is if the job provides valuable experience that will assist in attaining career goals.
  4. Office Culture - Although the move would be within the same company the social norms differ greatly between offices, particularly cross-culturally. It is important that the office culture is one where an employee would happily spend eight or more working hours daily.
  5. Escape - Another important factor to consider is whether there is a way to return to one's home office in case the adjustment to the new location proves too difficult or the position is not a good fit.
