Compassion vs. Buddhist Nationalism

What are we to make of these two examples? What is there in religions that can generate such paradoxes as a transcendent compassion and such bitter hatred? One might think here of the Aryan Invasion Theory, Gandhi, and Hindu nationalism today, along with Mahaghosananda and the Rohingya crisis. Can we ignore the political dimensions of religions when we think about "Religion"?
