The Bedford Handbook states, comparison and contrast "stresses similarities or differences, it may be patterned in one of two ways. The two subjects may be presented one at a time, block style... Or a paragraph may proceed point by point, treating the two subjects together, one aspect at a time." Choose a significant subject to compare and contrast, based on similarities when the two are very different, OR based on their differences, if the subjects are very similar. For instance, the differences between a horse and a human are obvious, but it might be interesting to show what is similar about either their physiology or intellect. When writing the five paragraph, consider a thesis statement with three points of development. If you state the similarities in one point and the differences in another, you will not have a topic for the third body paragraph. Rather base the comparison or contrast on three points to develop.
