The 18-point increase in blood pressure is a large increase. This study suggests that heavy salt consumption puts one at risk for hypertension. In the larger population from which this sample came, the mean difference might be as small as 11 points or as large as 25 points. Even an 11-point increase in blood pressure has meaningful negative consequences for health. To increase confidence that salt consumption is associated with an increase in blood pressure, it would be a good idea to replicate this study. When doing so, a larger sample would allow the researcher to get a better estimate of the size of the effect in the population.
