Both To Catch a Thief and The Place Beyond the Pines provide their viewers with narratives (i.e. stories) but in very different ways. Think about the following questions for your paper: Is there a 3-act structure in each film? If so, where does each act begin and end? Where are the inciting moments? Do the stories proceed in a linear cause and effect logic or not? Do protagonists, themes and goals stay consistent throughout the films or do they change? Do both films feel resolved at the end? (Please do not just answer these questions for your paper. Instead, try to synthesize your ideas into a comparison/contrast as described below.)

In your essay, compare and contrast the narrative structure in To Catch a Thief with the one in The Place Beyond the Pines. Use the relevant vocabulary from Chapter 4 of Looking at Movies. Make sure to discuss as well the effects on the viewer of the two different narrative styles. Truth, detail and precision are what make a good essay.
