Typically in a digital controller of a mechatronic system, the arithmetic operations, ADD and SUBTRACT, are performed using hardware. More complex operations including MULTIPLY and DIVIDE may be implemented either by hardware or by software. The software operations can be more than an order of magnitude slower.
