Just as you did for the paintings in Module Six, you will now perform a critical analysis on a film. The recommended films for this module are either Fight Club orBlack Swan. This is an open-ended assignment that will allow you to develop an original argument that will hopefully be fully rounded out in your film analysis essay. I have put a DVD copy of Fight Club and Black Swan on reserve at the SE Center, but you can request it through the PCC library system. Rated R for profanity and disturbing imagery, both films are challenging in more ways than one. If you do not want to write about these films, choose one of the alternative topics for this discussion.
FILM ANALYSIS
If you are willing to do a critical analysis of these films, choose one of the following four questions and answer it in a direct, concise, and well-supported manner.
1. Analyze the Apollonian and Dionysian symbolism in either the film Fight Club or Black Swan. Be prepared to cite specific examples in this module's discussion forum.
2. Is it possible to compare and contrast the symbolic imagery in Fight Club or Black Swan with the imagery in Coleridge's "Kubla Kahn"? If so, be prepared to cite specific examples in this module's discussion forum.
3. Our society has, for better or worse, made the transition from an agrarian, to an industrial, to a service/information economic model. What does Fight Club have to say about modern masculinity in our service/information society? Compare and contrast its theme of masculine authenticity with the depictions of the men in Anschutz's The Ironworker's Noontime.
4. Fight Club contains a great deal of religious symbolism in addition to the obvious Apollonian and Dionysian symbolism. Can you find and interpret any overt scenes of religious symbolism? If so, how do they tie into the film's theme?
ALTERNATIVE TOPICS FOR THIS MODULE
If you do not want to do a critical analysis of the two recommended films, choose one of the following two questions and answer it in a direct, concise, and well-supported manner.
1. Camille Paglia, a prominent neo-Freudian in the 90s, goes as far as to argue that the Apollonian is more masculine and the Dionysian is more feminine. In other words, she believes that men are more comfortable with the Apollonian needs of the head (logic and order), whereas women are more comfortable with the needs of the heart (emotion and nature). Granted, she does not say that women are less intellectual than men; rather, she argues that men and woman are simply drawn to different ways of interacting with the world. Do you agree with her assessment?
2. Find a substitute film and then clear your choice with me. If I approve of your substitution, perform a critical analysis of this film and post your supported assertions in the Module Seven discussion board. If you want me to approve of your substitution, it must go beyond disposable popcorn entertainment. The film must have enough depth to warrant a critical analysis.
