Refer to a survey of University of California faculty members on affirmative action policies for the university (Roper Center, 1996). The survey was based on telephone interviews with a random sample of 1001 faculty members conducted in December 1995.

One of the questions asked was, "Do you favor or oppose using race, religion, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin as a criterion for admission to the University of California?" Of the 804 male respondents, 47% said "Favor," and of the 197 female respondents, 73% said "Favor."

a. Find the conservative margin of error for the males, and use it to compute an approximate 95% confidence interval for the percent of males in the population who favored this policy at the time of the poll.

b. Repeat the analysis in part (a) for females.

c. Compare the approximate 95% confidence intervals you found in parts (a) and (b), and comment on whether you think male and female faculty members in the population differed on this question.
