Defining, Measuring, and Managing Stress:
1. Compare and contrast Selye's with Lazarus's theory of stress. Which theory seems to most accurately explain the human stress response? What elements of the stress response do the theories not explain?
2. Compare and contrast problem-focused coping with emotion-focused coping. Describe some stressful situations for which each style of coping would be most effective. Which coping style do you tend to favor when you encounter stress?
3. Imagine you are a health psychologist and you see a patient who recently married a woman with a 9-year-old daughter and was recently reprimanded at work for reduced productivity over the previous few months. What sources of stress might this patient be experiencing? What interventions might you suggest to help him cope with daily stress?
Understanding Stress, Immunity, and Disease:
1. Does stress cause disease? Based on the evidence discussed in the chapter, what role do you think stress plays in the development of physical and mental disease?
2. Describe the diathesis-stress model and give some examples of research evidence that provides support for this model. How does it contribute to our understanding of the relationship between stress and disease?
3. What questions still need to answered/evidence needs to be gathered in order to establish the relationship between stress and disease?
