If your colleague selected the same time period, compare your responses about the social, cultural, political, and economic climate. What did you learn from your colleague's post that you didn't find in your own research? Or what can you share from your own research that your colleague didn't consider? If you have an additional resource that builds on your colleague's points, share that as well.
Colleagues Post: In 19th Century America, the social, cultural, and political climate experienced a significant amount of growth and change, which was defined by the women's suffrage movement, child labor laws, abolition, and prison reform (National Geographic, 2024). The economic climate started to shift focus from small farmers and merchants to over sea connections and interests (The United States World War One Centennial Commission, 2021). Equally as important to economic climate, the homes of the lower-class population were often small, cold, and infested with vermin, which created illness and unequal opportunities for this class of individuals to receive support for their needs (National Association of Social Workers, n.d.).
This climate impacted the view of the social problem of unequal opportunities, which brought forward the change of mindset of equal justice for all populations. There were programs, laws, and policies created to support with increasing equal opportunities for women, men, prisoners, children, and several other populations. Also, the economic climate created a push for recognition of the negative consequence of unequal opportunities, such as increased illness, poor living situations, and struggles with mental illness (National Geographic, 2024).
My Post: A dramatic shift in American society, culture, politics and economics took place during the nineteenth century. In social terms, inequality and social injustice has become more widely recognized, especially in the areas of poverty, labor exploitation or access to essential needs like health care. In terms of culture, a century marked by the rise of various movements including abolitionism, women's rights and temperance reflect changing values and ideologies at that time.
The view of affordable health care as a societal issue has been greatly influenced by the society, culture, politics and economics of the 19th century. In terms of society as a whole and culture, the need for societal responsibility to address public health and welfare issues is increasingly recognized due to concerns about human rights and rising Social Reform movement.
