Case Study: You are assigned the care of an 87 year old client on a medical unit at a local hospital. Ms. A. has been admitted with fluid overload from a recent exacerbation of left sided heart failure. Her family consists of two daughters, one of whom lives 1500 miles away. She also has three grandchildren (all attending college or working in other parts of the country). The main caregiving is provided by her daughter, Sara who lives the closest to her. Ms. A has been living at an assisted living facility due to recent advances in her physiological needs. The staff recommended that she be moved to a skilled nursing facility. Over the last few days, Ms. A has developed shortness of breath, periorbital, dependent and abdominal edema. Low dose Lasix was administered per MD orders... however, Ms. A is incontinent and wheelchair bound, which presents additional challenges for the aides and the caregivers.
