Engineering Resource Efficiency
Objective:
This assignment is designed to provide you knowledge of the application, implementation, and technicalities involved in resource efficiency through the medium of reducing waste in the construction process. You may use online resources, access to any project information that you may have or that may be available online, project managers, and any other sources you might find appropriate.
The assignment has three tasks, the first two are expected to be attempted in an essay form, and the third is a combination of a numerical problem and short essay. Balance out the words based on the context you are addressing in each task.
Task 1
A large amount of waste in terms of all types of resources takes place on the construction site during the actual construction phase. Discuss broad heads of resource wastage during construction operations and the associated mitigation measures. Discuss material flows, equipment/machinery, water, energy, human resources.
Task 2
The fundamental concept behind Lean construction is to reduce various categories of waste in the production process. Discuss any five Lean waste categories, with five possible reasons on-site. For each category of waste, discuss two mitigating Lean construction practices.
Task 3
Work out embodiment of carbon in concrete for the cradle-to-gate information stage, and then for the A4 stage from at least five sources in Auckland, assuming that the concrete is required for pouring for the frame of a new construction building in Auckland CBD. Quote the source of the applied parameters with the link. Compare cradle-to-gate figures obtained by you with the BRANZ database and bring out what you may think are the possible reasons for the difference. Make suitable assumptions with justification, and clearly delineate various calculation phases.
