A 120-in long annealed rod with a cross-section area of 0.86 in2 extruded from 5083 Aluminum alloy has been axially loaded. Under the load the length of the rod

increased to 120.15 in. From appropriate tables it has been found that the extrusion has a modulus of elasticity of 10.2 x 103 ksi and design tensile yield stress Fty=16 ksi.

(a) Assume an allowable stress of 50% of the design value, calculate the tensile stress and the axial load applied to the rod.

(b) Compare calculated tensile stress with allowable tensile stress and find the absolute value of elongation of the rod for the stress equal to allowable.
