Case: Even before the Civil War, Irish Catholics sought to protect their community and assert their strength by organizing politically. Most Irish identified with the Democratic Party, and their growing numbers allowed Democratic political machines o dominate many major cities, including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, and San Francisco, in the late 1800s. "

I chose this section because it shows that even though the Iris were immigrants and weren't looked upon much, they showed that they could function and be a part of the US culture and contribute to its political movement. One of the biggest reasons the Irish had little difficulty assimilating was due to the fact that they were Protestant. Trumping over the fact they may have lacked education. Coming together and uniting through politics and the Catholic church helped the Irish settle and become a part of the United States.
