Case: Tetrapodophis amplectus was described in 2015 as a snake with four legs. Immediately, there was controversy.
Another group of researchers was able to examine it and concluded that it was actually a species of lizard unrelated to snakes. To add to the controversy, the specimen was in a private collection and became no longer available for examination, and it was likely smuggled illegally from Brazil. This all has limited careful scientific debate on what this creature actually was.
