Report Structure
A report is different from writing an essay. It is a factual document in this case with a front sheet that identifies your student ID number and the Module Information. The body of the report will be based around the three tasks and followed by a reference list of any references and a bibliography of any sources of information used.
This assessment is the equivalent of 2,500 words; however, there are elements of drawings and comparative tables included in the assessment. To help you complete each task a word count is provided. Please ensure that you adhere to this word count and be concise and focused on the assignment tasks.
Assignment Tasks Scenario
A private construction company is developing 12 typical detached houses on the North bank of Merseyside in a contaminated brownfield land (Vauxhall Industrial Estate). The houses are 2 storey with garages and front and rear small gardens. The project is planned between October and May during the post COVID-19 pandemic.
Any further assumptions made to supplement the above information must be stated and justified. In real project situations, you often do not have full information.
1 Site Investigation, Groundworks:
A) Describe the process of a site investigation considering site conditions, the proposed development and environmental considerations.
2 Foundations and Ground Floors
A) Detail to a scale of 1:10 a cross section of the substructure to just above DPC level including external cavity wall and ground floor construction, displaying specification of fabric materiality to meet the recommended new build U values required. This should be a ‘Scaled' construction detail, drawn by hand, presented in the appropriate manner and
including all annotations and specifications.
B) Justify the selection of the main components for your detail. Note - there is often not one ‘right'
answer - every site and situation is different.
3 External Walls and Roofs
A) Explain and compare the use of prefabricated timber frames and brick and block loadbearing structures for external walls. In your answer you must consider the following factors:
- Strength and structural stability
- Construction or assembly time
- Thermal performance
- Durability
- Fire safety
- Acoustics
- Condensation
B) Explain, with illustrations where appropriate, the typical recognised construction types / design options of a flat roof for the garage. You must consider the following in your explanation:
I. Current construction types for the designs, considering the material/technology selection.
II. Building regulations, thermal design which includes position of insulation and prevention of condensation.
III. Provision for falls and drainage.
