Scenario:

You left the office this morning for a one-day company-sponsored training program. Your department was turned over to Ms. R, but she became ill and went home. You were called back to the office on an emergency basis. The time is 1:00 p.m.  As you walk into your office, you are faced with 10 critical problems.

Priority List:

  • A formal grievance from Ms. R is on your desk. To read and consider it would take 15 minutes.
  • Mr. Big has left word that he wants to see you in his office immediately upon your return. Anticipated time is 60 minutes.
  • You have some very important looking unopened mail (both company and personal) on your desk. Anticipated time is 10 minutes.
  • Your telephone is ringing.
  • A piece of equipment has broken down, halting all production. You are the only one who can fix it. Anticipated time is 30 minutes.
  • Someone is seated outside your office waiting to see you. Anticipated time is 10 minutes.
  • You have an urgent email notice to call a Los Angeles telephone number. Both your mother and company headquarters are located in Los Angeles. Anticipated time is 10 minutes.
  • Mr. X has sent word that he wants to see you and has asked that you return his call as soon as possible. Anticipated time is 10 minutes.
  • Ms. Q is in the women's lounge and claims to be sick. She wants your permission to go home. It would take about five minutes to get the facts and make a decision.
  • In order to get to your office by 1:00 p.m. you had to miss lunch. You are very hungry, but you figure it will take 30 minutes to get something substantial to eat.

List the above priorities in the order in which you would deal with each situation.
