Community Health Assesment and Health Improvement Planning
Watch the video and explore the various links on the website before answering the questions.
1. Explain what made Mayor Mick Cornett realize his city had a problem.
2. The website explains what a Community Health Assessment is and offers tools to help communities assess their health needs, including several commonly used assessment and planning models. Discuss if you think Cornett and Oklahoma City followed a similar assessment plan before making changes. Include specific points from Cornett's talk to support your answer.
3. The unit discussed the role environmental and social factors play in the fight against obesity. Which environmental or societal factor do you believe most endangered the health of Oklahoma City and why? In what way was that particular factor addressed or not addressed through Cornett's work?
4. Consider the improvements Oklahoma City made during their journey to be healthier. Which of the improvements do you think is something your own community could benefit from and why? (Explain where you live and what problem such an improvement would address in your own town).
5. Cornett discussed how he felt it was important for his community to begin and continue to engage in a conversation about obesity. Explain why the conversation piece is so important in making successful changes in a town. Do you believe topics such as obesity should be discussed in places like schools and businesses? Why or why not?
6. The unit discussed how marketing plays a role in obesity. Consider what Cornett discussed about how the media chose to present Oklahoma City's story and discuss why you think their initial spin on the story about the city going on a diet was crucial to the community's success.
7. After hearing Cornett's story and exploring the CDC website, consider your own community. Both Cornett and the website discuss the implementation plans of strategies, including identifying an improvement that needs to be done, how it will impact the community, and partnerships that may be needed to bring the improvement to light. Determine an improvement you think your community should make and provide a brief explanation of how it would improve the health of your community, who would need to be involved to make it happen and how it could be funded.
