Question

Juanita is a health educator who has worked with the King Mountain community for the past year addressing the increased incidence of HIV infection among women of childbearing ages. The King Mountain community is predominantly Non-Hispanic Caucasian (40%), Hispanic (36 %) and African American (23%), and quite diverse economically. The community has a long history in community activism. It is also a community with a strong spiritual tradition among African Americans and Hispanics. Juanita and her planning committee have designed a HIV prevention program for women of childbearing ages 18 - 25 years old. They are having difficulty deciding where to implement the program. The community representatives want the program offered through the neighborhood churches. The professional health representatives are uncomfortable with this suggestion, because they do not think that religious institutions have a role in health matters.
