Question

Vignette: Mark is a 48 year-old Marine veteran, who presents to your community clinic for treatment of insomnia. Upon completion of the intake, you learn he has PTSD, mild major depression (with no suicidal thoughts), and also uses alcohol regularly and frequently to self-medicate. Your clinic has a policy that anyone who presents with a substance disorder must be referred to a chemical dependency program, where the addiction will be treated; they can then return to your community clinic to continue treatment for the other issues. When Mark hears this news, he is devastated and angry. Your heart is also heavy and sees how the alcohol is integrated with his other diagnoses. Please share your thoughts about this case vignette, referencing material from the Rosenberg.
